English clubs contesting the Premiership in 2006/2007
Arsenal
Having only moved into their new Emirates Stadium during the summer, Arsenal will be hoping to build on last season's European Cup final appearance.
Aston Villa
Northern Irishman Martin O'Neill has instilled a new sense of purpose in the club and with American tycoon Randy Werner providing the financial investment there are high hopes amongst Villa fans for a resurgence in club fortunes.
Blackburn Rovers
Former Wales boss Mark Hughes has built a tight, organised side at Ewood Park and with the additions of Benni McCarthy, Franny Jeffers and Jason Roberts finally has some strength in attacking positions.
Bolton Wanderers
The epitome of well organised, "play to your strengths" football, Bolton will be strong challengers for a UEFA Cup place or better.
Charlton Athletic
Iain Dowie's short reign may have ended prematurely but caretaker manager Les Reed feels that his side have enough quality to avoid relegation and with a formidable strike force including Darren Bent, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink they certainly should have the firepower.
Chelsea
Back to back league title wins in 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 mean the pressure is now on for continued EPL success and a real push for the European Cup.
Big money signings such as German captain Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko haven't settled as planned but Chelsea have enough quality to compete.
Everton
Inconsistency would be the keyword with Everton under David Moyes control with a 4th place finish two years ago being followed by a brush with relegation and early European exits the following year. The signing of Andy Johnson should help them but they are still some way off challenging Liverpool for the title of Merseyside's top team.
Fulham
Chris Coleman has worked wonders on a restricted budget as the glory days of promotion under Bracewell and Keegan and big spending under Tigana disappear into the past. Destined for midtable obscurity, Fulham have more than enough talent to surprise some of the top sides.
Liverpool
A third place league finish last season to follow a European Cup victory the season before and still the natives are restless when it comes to Rafa Benitez and his team. His reliance on his Spanish favourites such as Xabi Alonso in a central midfield role which relegates star player Steven Gerrard to the periphery is still surprising but with a strong squad Liverpool should be challenging for a Champion's League spot again.
