Top best Soccer Player 2007

TOP World Best Soccer Players 2006/2007

1. Kaka
Kaka's World Cup ended early in disappointment as Brazil failed to live up to their early billing and failed to reach the final for the first time since 1990. Personally the young playmaker was under pressure in the following months at both club level, where he was expected to fill the void left at AC Milan by Andriy Shevchenko's departure to Chelsea, and for Brazil where new coach Dunga began his reign by dropping Kaka to the bench in the friendly against Argentina. In both cases Kaka delivered the perfect answer by firing AC Milan to the Champion's League final and by regaining his Brazil starting spot in style.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo
No longer is the young Portuguese winger known as "the other Ronaldo" in world footballing circles as his performances for Manchester United, in both domestic and European competition, have catapulted him into the upper echelon of world soccer's greats. Skilful with either foot and deceptively strong in the air, Ronaldo has taken his game to an all new level this season, mixing the skilful showboating with plenty of end product in terms of goals and assists as Manchester United look set for the Premiership title and a possible league and cup double. Double Player of the Year awards haven't flattered him at all.

3. Steven Gerrard
While we usually clamour more for the skilful artists and big goalscorers when it comes to handing out awards, it would be completely remiss to leave Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard out of any list of the world's top players over the past season. Strength and skill personified, Gerrard is the engine room of a hard working Liverpool side that has now made it's way to a second European Cup final in three years and stand on the verge of bringing a 6th European Cup back to Anfield. If one player espouses all that is good about English football over the years, it is Steven Gerrard.

4. Ronaldinho
Unarguably one of the major disappointments at last summer's World Cup was the lacklustre performance of Barcelona's Brazilian star Ronaldinho. Long touted as the world's finest player he seemed slow and tired when given the chance to prove his worth on the biggest international soccer stage after a gruelling season winning La Liga and the Champion's League with Barcelona. 2006/2007 again saw his detractors aim digs at his weight and apparent disinterest in the game but 24 goals in 53 games tells a different story as the puppet master again has lit up world soccer at the most vital of moments.

5. Lionel Messi
It's been a tough year for Argentinian wonderkid Lionel Messi as injury robbed him of a lot of the 2006 part of the season for both club and country as he tries to establish himself in one of club football's most entertaining strikeforces at Barcelona and take on the international mantle of legend Diego Maradona, which is no small feat in itself! Messi has responded by firing in an average of a goal every other game for Barcelona and Argentina this season and with an unending bag of tricks is really my number one young player to watch over the next few years. "The new Maradona"-maybe not but then who ever could be?

Volunteer for UEFA EURO 2008

Over 8,400 volunteer applications for UEFA EURO 2008™

Zurich – The chance to experience UEFA EURO 2008™ as a volunteer has generated enormous

interest. To date, 8,442 men and women have applied via the tournament website

http://www.euro2008.com/ to work as volunteers at the world's third largest sports event.

Most applications are from Switzerland and Austria, although many Germans also seem keen

to relive the emotions of last summer's successful World Cup. Applications from overseas are

also flooding in: football fans from a total of 120 countries in all continents have applied to be

volunteers at the European Championship final round from 7 to 29 June 2008.

The tournament organisers are looking for 5,000 volunteers in all. The two main host cities,

Vienna and Basle, will each need 1,000 volunteers, while the other six cities require 500 each.

So far, a total of 5,208 people have applied for Switzerland and 3,234 for Austria. The city with

most applications so far is Vienna (1,945 applications), followed by Zurich (1,910) and Basle

(1,258). Applicants for Klagenfurt have a good chance of success, since only 177 people have

applied there so far.

70% of the applicants are men. The age range is fairly well balanced, with interest shown by

people of all ages, from students to senior citizens. Of the 14 deployment areas, "Guest

Services" (first point of contact for visitors) is the favourite, followed by "Media" and "Welcome

Services" (looking after UEFA guests and VIPs). There is still a need for volunteers in the

"Transport" sector, where Basle and Vienna each need 160 drivers. Anyone who wishes to

experience UEFA EURO 2008™ in this role and knows their way around either of these two cities

has the best chance of being selected.

In Switzerland, interviews with future volunteers are being held at weekends, while those in

Austria are taking place during the week. Between 15 and 20 people are conducting the

interviews in each of the eight host cities. Around 100 interviews are held on each recruitment

day. All interviews last around 30 minutes. Until the 5,000 UEFA EURO 2008™ volunteers have all

been recruited, it is estimated that more than 120 people will spend around 5,000 hours on 100

days interviewing up to 10,000 candidates.

The final selections will be made by April 2008 at the latest. Approximately 75% of all the

applicants are also interested in working as volunteers at the final round draw in Lucerne on 2

December 2007. These volunteers will be chosen in the first phase, which ends in November

2007. The second recruitment phase will begin as soon as the final round draw is made and will

last until February 2008.

English clubs contesting the Premiership in 2006/2007

Arsenal
Having only moved into their new Emirates Stadium during the summer, Arsenal will be hoping to build on last season's European Cup final appearance.
Aston Villa
Northern Irishman Martin O'Neill has instilled a new sense of purpose in the club and with American tycoon Randy Werner providing the financial investment there are high hopes amongst Villa fans for a resurgence in club fortunes.
Blackburn Rovers
Former Wales boss Mark Hughes has built a tight, organised side at Ewood Park and with the additions of Benni McCarthy, Franny Jeffers and Jason Roberts finally has some strength in attacking positions.

Bolton Wanderers
The epitome of well organised, "play to your strengths" football, Bolton will be strong challengers for a UEFA Cup place or better.
Charlton Athletic
Iain Dowie's short reign may have ended prematurely but caretaker manager Les Reed feels that his side have enough quality to avoid relegation and with a formidable strike force including Darren Bent, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink they certainly should have the firepower.
Chelsea
Back to back league title wins in 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 mean the pressure is now on for continued EPL success and a real push for the European Cup.
Big money signings such as German captain Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko haven't settled as planned but Chelsea have enough quality to compete.
Everton
Inconsistency would be the keyword with Everton under David Moyes control with a 4th place finish two years ago being followed by a brush with relegation and early European exits the following year. The signing of Andy Johnson should help them but they are still some way off challenging Liverpool for the title of Merseyside's top team.
Fulham
Chris Coleman has worked wonders on a restricted budget as the glory days of promotion under Bracewell and Keegan and big spending under Tigana disappear into the past. Destined for midtable obscurity, Fulham have more than enough talent to surprise some of the top sides.
Liverpool
A third place league finish last season to follow a European Cup victory the season before and still the natives are restless when it comes to Rafa Benitez and his team. His reliance on his Spanish favourites such as Xabi Alonso in a central midfield role which relegates star player Steven Gerrard to the periphery is still surprising but with a strong squad Liverpool should be challenging for a Champion's League spot again.

clubs contesting Italy's Serie
A in 2006/2007

Ascoli

It’s
been twenty years since Irish midfield legend Liam Brady played for Ascoli but the club seems now to be enjoying some of the
luck which deserted it on it’s mid 1990s descent into
the depths of Serie C1. An arbitrary promotion due to
financial problems at Genoa
was the first step to recovery.

Atalanta
Bergamo

Nicola Ventola’s attacking qualities should prove sufficient to
consolidate Atalanta’s Serie
A position if he can stay fit and on form.

Cagliari

Mauro Esposito
will face a tough challenge to keep last season’s strugglers in the top flight
but a strong start has given them a good base to build on.

Catania

Preseason
favourites for a straight drop back to Serie B, Catania Calcio have surprised everyone with a fantastic start to
the 2006/2007 season giving them high hopes of not only survival but also
European football next season.

Chievo Verona

Italian
football’s most inconsistent team, Chievo benefited
from the Italian match fixing scandal to reclaim a place in Serie
A for 2006/2007 but will do well to keep it.

Empoli

A
surprise UEFA Cup spot following the scandal at the clubs above them in the
2005/2006 table has buoyed Empoli and their strong
start to 2006/2007 sees them fighting for a top six spot and a deserved return
to European football again next season.

Fiorentina

A 15 point deficit was always going to be
hard to claw back and despite the best efforts of the Florentine side they
still languish in the relegation places as 2006 draws to a close.

They are
in solid enough form though and if that continues in 2007 they will be able to
consolidate their position in the top flight and prepare for a fresh start next
season.

Inter
Milan

After
being awarded last season’s title by default, Inter are forging ahead and
making the most of the reduction in competition the match fixing scandal has
given them this season. Strong summer signings including Patrick Vieria and Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Juventus has
tightened up an already impressive, if underachieving, squad.

Lazio

Having
had their punishment reduced to only a 1 point deficit Lazio are best equipped
of all the scandal shrouded clubs to really challenge for Serie
A honours. Even still they are only skirting with the
UEFA Cup spots and will do well to really challenge for a Champion’s League
spot come the end of the season.

Livorno

Lacking
in big name stars they may be but Livorno have a
tight, well drilled unit who have been successful so far in 2006/2007 at
picking up much needed points. If it continues they will face the unlikely task
of battling other surprise packages like Catania and Empoli
for a European spot.

Messina

Their
poor away form may be their undoing this season especially once Reggina and Fiorentina claw back
the points they had deducted in the match fixing scandal. Escaping relegation
by the skin of their teeth would be a successful season for Messina.

Milan

Milan’s penchant for draws away from the San Siro is the main reason for their current lack of ability
to pull themselves higher in the table and really escape the problems of their
eight point preseason punishment deduction. Rumours
abound of a loan return in January for Andriy Shevchenko and it might be the spark the Rossoneri need to climb the table.

Palermo

The
Sicilians are battling on two fronts are being pushed into the UEFA Cup spots
post-punishment in the summer. The loss of defender Grosso
hasn’t hindered their Serie A charge though and they
are dark horses for a Champion’s League spot and top three finish.

Parma

No point
deficits at Parma
so there are few excuses for the club’s lowly league position. They’ll need to
improve in 2007 if they want to survive at all.

Reggina

Fifteen
points deducted for their part in the matchfixing
scandal and they are rooted to the foot of the table as December 2006 nears it’s end. It will take an escape worthy of Harry Houdini to
save themselves this season.

Roma

Never
will Roma stand a better chance of again lifting the Serie
A crown than this season with AC Milan and Fiorentina
comfortably held low in Serie A and Juventus paying their penance in Serie
B. If they can get some team unity they are Inter’s
only real challengers for the title.

Sampdoria

A young
side can often struggle due to inexperience and it proved so for Sampdoria last season. A steady midtable
finish beckons in 2006/2007.

Siena

Though
not short of quality foreign talent, Siena
often flatter to deceive and a midtable finish is
seemingly written in their destiny for 2006/2007 as well.

Torino

It’s
been a long time since Torino were Turin’s premier
football club but with Juventus playing out this
season in disgrace in Serie B, that time has finally
arrived again. A large and passionate support is no match for quality on the
pitch though and it’s here that Torino
are sadly still lacking.

Udinese

A 4th place finish in 2005 seems to have
hindered rather than helped Udinese and they seem
likely to again fall into midtable mediocrity, much
like they did in 2005/2006.

Ronaldinho

Brazilian
soccer star Ronaldinho was born Ronaldo de Assis Moreira on March 21, 1980, in
Porto Alegre. He's named after fellow Brazilian soccer star Ronaldo. His career
began with the youth team Gremio in Porto Algere, and his first senior appearance
came in 1998

Brazilian soccer star Ronaldinho was named the FIFA World
Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005, cementing his place as one of his sport's
most talented stars. His charming bent-toothed grin, flowing curls and sparkling
ballhandling skills also helped make him a major off-the-field celebrity. Ronaldinho's
first team was the Gremio Football Club of Brazil, where he began playing professionally
in 1998. He moved to the French club Paris-Saint Germain in 2001, and then on
to FC Barcelona in 2003 for a fee of 30 million Euros. He blossomed as a midfielder
with Barcelona, winning his World Player of the Year awards while lifting the
club out of the doldrums and pushing it to victory in the 2006 Champions League
final over Arsenal

Unarguably one of the major disappointments at last summer's
World Cup was the lacklustre performance of Barcelona's Brazilian star Ronaldinho.
Long touted as the world's finest player he seemed slow and tired when given the
chance to prove his worth on the biggest international soccer stage after a gruelling
season winning La Liga and the Champion's League with Barcelona. 2006/2007 again
saw his detractors aim digs at his weight and apparent disinterest in the game
but 24 goals in 53 games tells a different story as the puppet master again has
lit up world soccer at the most vital of moments.

Ronaldo

Ronaldo,
Soccer Player

Born: 22 September 1976
Birthplace: Bento Ribeiro, Brazil

Best Known As: FIFA Player of the Year 1996-97

Birth Name
Ronaldo
Luis Nazario de Lima

Nickname
Fenomeno
Ronaldinho

Ronaldo
has starred in 3 World Cups. He was in the Brazil squad in 1994 but didn’t
actually play. In the 1998 World Cup in France he scored 4 goals on the way to
the final when Brazil lost 3-0 to France.

However, in 2002, Ronaldo was
the top goal scorer, scoring both goals in Brazil's 2-0 defeat of Germany in the
World Cup Final.

In the 2006 World Cup, Ronaldo got off to a shaky start, but
in Brazil's third game - against Japan - he scored twice, thereby becoming the
joint highest scorer in World Cup history with 14 finals goals equalling Gerd
Muller's record.

In Brazil's defeat of Ghana in the last 16 of the 2006 World
Cup, Ronaldo scored again, to mean that he held the goalscoring record on his
own.

In January 2007, AC Milan signed Ronaldo from Real Madrid for £4.95m on
an 18-month deal.
